The Preventative Measures
Getting your car serviced before the storm is one of the best preventative measures. Making sure that your car is ready for the winter before it gets here is always a smart idea. When you get your car serviced, make sure to get your battery voltage checked. Even your engine's cooling system needs a check to be sure it doesn't expand too much and crack the engine. Don't forget to have them check your tires as well.
Also check the windshield washer reservoir, your windshield wipers and defrosters. You'll be grateful to have these working properly when in the middle of a snow storm. Another aspect that most people don't think of is making sure that your floor mats don't interfere with your pedals. If you hit a patch of black ice, the last thing you’ll want to worry about is if the floor mats are in the way.
Keep an ice scraper handy, preferably with a brush, and have an emergency kit with blankets, jumper cables, flashlights and warning devices for any season.
The most important part of your check list should be the protection for you and your loved ones. Inclement weather is just one thing you’ll need to worry about on the roadways and is fairly easy to plan for. Having proper insurance protection is as important as the proper fuel for driving.
